York is world-renowned as one of the most scenic and charming English cities, rich in cultural heritage and ancient history – and with some of the most impressive historic architecture in the country. But it’s not just a pretty face: it’s also home to a thriving café culture, with a growing reputation as a real ‘foodies’ city.

Here’s just some of the reasons we think York is one of the most romantic locations for your wedding:

  • The Castle Museum is home to the largest collection of Valentine’s cards in the UK, some dating back to 1797!
  • Nothing says ‘I love you’ like chocolate, and York is the original home of both Rowntrees (later Nestle) and Terry’s (since bought by Kraft/Mondelez). Yummy.
  • York Minster is the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, and it took 250 years to build!
  • The 650-year-old Merchant Adventurers Hall, is one of the best preserved medieval guildhalls in Europe.
  • York is within easy reach of both the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, both beautiful national parks. Have you thought about having a marquee wedding at home or on a friend’s land, or even asking a farmer if you can borrow a field for the weekend?
  • York’s cobbled and winding shopping street, The Shambles, is believed to be the oldest shopping street in Europe. We’ve been shopping since at least 1086. It’s also been voted by Google as the most picturesque street in Britain, in the Street View Awards.
  • York is the Most Haunted City in the UK, according to the International Ghost Research Foundation.
