Charis and David wanted a memorable English wedding to stun and surprise their American guests and hosted their perfect celebration with Dine at Allerton Castle.

Charis says: We got engaged in Aviemore in the Highlands of Scotland on December 10th 2011. For some reason we decided it would be a good idea to go and stay in a Mongolian Yurt with no heating in the middle of December! Luckily it was very beautiful (despite the freezing weather!) and we were out walking in the snow when David proposed.

We viewed several other venues and around York (where I’m from) but Allerton Castle was just so beautiful. David is American so we had lots of people flying a long way for the wedding so we wanted to give them something really special (and English)!

Allerton Castle is such a stunning location that your day really feels special. The rooms to get ready in beforehand are gorgeous and there is a great layout of rooms. There are quiet places to sit for those that don’t want to dance or be in the same room as the loud music. If you get lucky with the weather (which we did!) the grounds are also extensive and beautiful. The food from Dine was also amazing.

I wore a Caroline Castigliano dress. I chose it because I fell in love with it! I wanted my arms covered and it had really delicate lace with a V at the back, just what I wanted!

The bridesmaids wore Quarry coloured Alfred Sung dresses. They were all cocktail length but each different to suit them individually. The flower girl wore a child’s version in the same range. They were bought through Dessy  in the USA.

The groomsmen were all in full highland dress due to my Scottish heritage and both having lived in Edinburgh for the last 10 years. This was hired from Moss Bros  for the groom and best man and they wore Grey Watch tartan. The rest of them wore the same jackets from Moss Bros but their own kilts in their own tartan. My Dad and brothers were in Campbell kilts.

We carried purple bouquets with a range of different flowers of different shades.  Purple is my favourite colour. They included amnesia roses and daisies. They were done by the Garden of Eden Florist in York and were beautiful. They also dressed the stairs of the Castle and tables.

We would definitely recommend Dine at Allerton Castle to another couple.  They just took care of all the little details so they didn’t need worrying about – we could just get on and enjoy our day. I’m not even sure what they did to be honest, but they must have been running around like crazy while we were enjoying ourselves!

My favourite part of the day was arriving at the castle with my bridesmaids and seeing it all being set up – it was the first time they’d seen the venue and their reaction was amazing. Also the ceremony as it was so personal to us. And being outside in the sunshine! I can’t decide!

We used Jim Poyner Photography. He was wonderful and we would 100% recommend him. He was easy going and fun, but very professional. He did exactly what we wanted and the photos are perfect. He had a lovely guy called Chris with him as we wanted two photographers to capture everything – he was also amazing

We had Smoked Salmon, Chump of Lamb and Cheesecake for our wedding breakfast. We didn’t have a tasting as we were sure what we wanted, but Dine were very accommodating for dietary requirements and the food was great!

For our wedding cake we chose a top tier fruit cake and chocolate cupcakes made by Buttercream Cupcakes (Natasha Jane events). Yummy!

Natasha Jane Events also did the chair covers, lanterns on the stairs, lantern centre pieces and sweetie table. We would definitely recommend her, she did it perfectly.

Beau Letterpress did the invitations, order of services, place cards and so on. They were excellent and provided a really efficient service.  They were very helpful mulling over ideas with us and gave a gorgeous quality end result.

We had a ceilidh provided by the Northern Ceilidh Band – amazingly fun and really got everyone involved.

After the wedding we went to Peru for two weeks, the Galapagos Islands for a week then the USA for two weeks. While there we spent time with family in Boston and Maine and had another party in Boston for all the Americans that couldn’t make it to England. It was an incredible summer!

Our top tip for other brides and grooms would be to just try and enjoy every minute of it, including all the build-up. It really will be over before you know it!
